I also tried tools, options, then tabs but that does not show what you have kindly reproduced either. Where could that screen be? Is it possible I have a different version of firefox?

Before I go ahead and disconnect firefox is this easy to select the internet explorer as the default setting?
How about setting google as the default page as I have now,cocktail dresses cheap? Will google just show up or is that yet another setting I will have to change when i uncheck the firefox?

Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab to see which programs are set as default. You can set google as your homepage in both Firefox and IE.
This should release Firefox from being the default browser, and keep it from taking over from IE again in future, and also make google the home page for both browsers.
